How it works

Ideal body weight formulas date from clinical dosing work, where a standard reference weight was needed for drug calculations. Devine, Robinson and Miller each start with a base weight at five feet tall and add a set amount for every inch above that height, with different bases and increments for men and women. Because all three use height alone, they agree closely for average builds and disagree most at very short or very tall heights, which is why this page shows all three side by side.

How to read the result

Read the three figures as a narrow reference band, not a target you must hit. A person with broad shoulders or substantial muscle can be healthy well above the band, while someone with a slight frame can be healthy near its lower edge. Pair the band with BMI, waist measurement and, most importantly, blood pressure, blood sugar, fitness and how you feel day to day.

One practical tip

If you are setting a weight goal, use this band only as a starting conversation point, then adjust for your own history. A goal you can reach through steady eating and activity habits, and maintain without constant hunger, is worth more than a textbook number that demands extreme restriction.

Clinicians originally used these formulas for drug dosing, so they deliberately favour a standard reference over individual variation; that history is worth remembering before treating any of the three numbers as a personal verdict.

Because height alone cannot capture frame or muscle, treat the band as one reference among several, and give more weight to trends in waist size, strength and everyday energy than to any single kilogram figure.
